Amelia Horton [h.1.5.4]

Amelia Horton was the fourth child of Jeremiah Horton & Mary Ann Bailey born May 17th, 1844 & christened June 16th, 1844 at Christ Church, West Bromwich, Staffs.

Amelia was living with her parents & 2 sisters at Hadley’s Fordsough, West Bromwich in 1851.

Amelia’s mother died 1 year later in 1852 & her father remarried in 1854.

In 1861 Amelia, her father & step mother Sarah were living at Manchester Rd, West Bromwich, Staffs. Amelia was described as a pupil teacher.

By 1871 Amelia was working as a school mistress in Llangollen, North Wales. She was living with a 71 year old widow, Elizabeth Danes & her daughter in 1871 at Berwyn St., Llangollen.

Amelia married William Jones, brewer, at Holy Trinity, West Bromwich on October 18th, 1872.  Witnesses at the wedding were Amelia’s brother-in-law, Emmanuel Whitehouse & Annie Jones.  William was born c1846 at Llangollen, North Wales, the son of Thomas Jones, a farmer.

In 1881 William & Amelia were living in Llangollen, N. Wales where William was a hotel keeper at the Cambrian Hotel, Berwyn St. They had 2 children living with them at the time of the census – Amelia (3) & Sarah (1). They had a domestic servant & a nurse. There was another daughter, Selina, aged 5, who was living with her grandfather Jeremiah Horton & her aunt Sarah & uncle Emmanuel at 24 Birmingham Rd, West Bromwich.

In 1891 Amelia & William were found at 40 Berwyn St, Llangollen & both were described as living on their own means. Daughter Amelia was still at home & was a milliner’s apprentice. Daughter Selina was still living with her aunt Sarah in West Bromwich. Selina was still living with Aunt Sarah & Uncle Emmanuel in 1901 & was to marry Albert Edward Dance in April-June 1901 at Holy Trinity, West Bromwich.

Amelia died aged 56, at Sunny Bank, Llangollen & was buried December 4th, 1900 at Llangollen.

The whereabouts of William in 1901 is unknown, but daughter Amelia was employed as a draper’s assistant by Frisby Dyke & Co, a high quality draper’s store. She was living with many other employees at 58-66 Lord St, Mount Pleasant, Liverpool. A year later Amelia married Henry Brundrit Dorning in July-September 1902 at Corwen, Denbighshire.

By 1911 daughter Amelia had been widowed & at the time of the census she was visiting Gertrude & Richard Halsall, a team owner, at 4 Bennetts Hill, Birkenhead, Cheshire. Daughter Selina was still living with Uncle Emmanuel, Aunt Sarah having died, in West Bromwich. She had 2 children by this time, but husband Albert Edward Dance was not with her at the time of the census.
